Long the preserve of whitewater paddlers in Quebec, a unique geological feature has allowed the creation of a spectacular area: the Jacques-Cartier River canyon.
Located 30 minutes from Quebec City, the Jacques-Cartier River canyon is one of the most beautiful sport river sectors in Quebec and an exceptional site for rafting and inflatable kayaking.
The Jacques-Cartier River, 178 kilometers long, flows through two geological regions:
the Laurentian mountain range over 161 kilometers
the St. Lawrence lowlands for 17 kilometers, just before joining the St. Lawrence River
It is in this latter region - the St. Lawrence lowlands - that sedimentary rocks (clay, sand and limestone) originating from marine deposits left by an ancient prehistoric sea are found.
Add a river and a few million years of erosion, and you get a completely unique landscape: a gorge carved into an ancient ocean floor.

Distance from the Jacques-Cartier Canyon to Quebec City and Montreal
30 minutes from Quebec
2 hours from Montreal

The canyon is located on the Jacques-Cartier River at Pont-Rouge and Donnacona/Cap-Santé.
The best way to get there is by river.
The Rivière Concept base camp is located at the end of the canyon section, in Donnacona. We are directly on the banks of the Jacques-Cartier River, 2 minutes from Highway 40, the main road linking Quebec City to Montreal on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River.
A world-renowned site
Every winter, the canyon attracts ice climbing athletes from around the world for Festiglace, an event that was once the largest ice climbing gathering in the world. https://www.festiglace.org

Accessible
The level of difficulty (beginner to intermediate) of the Jacques-Cartier canyon makes this sector particularly accessible, with or without experience.
Rapids: R1 to R3 depending on the water level

The level of difficulty depends heavily on the river flow.

Rafting -type boats are stable and ideal for beginners and families with children, at any time during the season (from age 6).
The inflatable kayak descent will delight the most athletic and those seeking more autonomy and thrills in medium and low water (from 11 years old).
The descent is always accompanied by a friendly and professional river guide.
Continuous profile
A non-stop wave pool stretching for 10km.
3 types of profiles for sport rivers.
Continuous: constant gradient, few flat sections, almost continuous rapids
Discontinuous: short and medium rapids interspersed with long flat sections (at least as long as the rapids)
In a stepped pattern: thresholds + flat areas (section of calm water)
The Jacques-Cartier canyon section has a continuous profile, which is relatively rare on a commercial river in Quebec, where stepped profiles are more common.
A classic for whitewater paddlers in the Quebec region
Several paddlers from the Quebec City area experienced their first whitewater experience in the Jacques-Cartier canyon (Pont-Rouge/Donnacona section).
"An easy descent into a magnificent gorge"
"An easy descent in a truly spectacular setting: during the first half of the descent, the river flows at the bottom of a magnificent gorge bordered by vertical walls of whitish limestone, dotted with cedar trees. A few overhanging bends take them to a height of 75 meters."

"A canyon nearly 1 km long contains the most beautiful rapids in the section."
"This section is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in the Quebec region (...) it will present different faces that will charm both novices and experts.
The scenery is breathtaking, with numerous cliffs. This section of the Jacques-Cartier River is a must-do, regardless of your skill level or the water level.

"One of the great classics in Quebec"
"The Pont-Rouge section in Donnacona is one of the great classics in Quebec. It is paddleable at all water levels depending on the paddler's experience."
"It's a surfing paradise, with some waves reaching up to 30 meters wide. Although these superb swells attract many enthusiasts, the beauty of the place remains untouched. A huge limestone gorge, several hundred meters long, captivates all the paddlers who enjoy this spot."

"Renowned for its surf waves"
"Renowned for its surf waves, more numerous than on almost any other river in North America. Some rapids have more than 100 waves each, and most are wide enough to accommodate several boats. Plan for a longer trip than the advertised 10 kilometers. Most people spend the entire day there and give it their all, ending up exhausted."

Atlantic Salmon
The Jacques-Cartier River has a remarkable feature: it is the westernmost salmon river in North America.
